Ipe decking, also known as Brazilian Walnut, is a popular choice for outdoor decking due to its numerous benefits. I personally use Ipe and Brazilian Wood Decking. Here are some of the key advantages I have found using Ipe as my Brazilian Hardwood Deck:

 1. Durability: Ipe is renowned for its exceptional durability. It is one of the hardest woods available, which means it can withstand heavy traffic, impacts, and harsh weather conditions. Ipe decking can last for several decades, often outlasting other decking materials. It is 3x times harder than Oak.

 2. Resistance to Decay and Insects: Ipe is naturally resistant to rot, decay, and insect infestations. This resistance is due to its dense grain and high natural oil content. It is so hard bugs cannot bite into it. As such, it doesn’t require chemical treatments or preservatives to maintain its integrity.

 3. Low Maintenance: Ipe decking requires minimal maintenance. It doesn’t need to be sealed or stained regularly, which can save time every spring and money over the long term. A periodic cleaning with mild soap and water is usually sufficient to keep it looking good.

 4. Beautiful Appearance: Ipe has a rich, dark brown to olive-brown color that deepens over time. It has an attractive, exotic appearance that adds a touch of elegance to outdoor spaces. Its fine, straight grain and smooth surface create a beautiful, polished finish. I use edge-grooved boards and the Ipe Clip Extreme fasteners.  That way no screws show to mar the beauty of the wood.

 5. High Density: Ipe is incredibly dense, which makes it resistant to scratches and wear. This density also makes it less likely to splinter or crack, ensuring a smooth and safe surface for walking barefoot and lounging.

 6. Fire Resistance: Ipe has a Class A fire rating, which is the same rating given to concrete and steel. This means it is highly resistant to fire, making it suitable for fire-prone areas.

 7. Sustainability: Ipe is considered sustainable when sourced responsibly. Look for certifications like FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) to ensure that your Ipe decking comes from well-managed forests. At a minimum, your Ipe should be imported under the Lacey Act.

 8. Longevity: Ipe decking can last 25 years or more with proper care, making it a cost-effective choice in the long run.

 9. Strength: Ipe is exceptionally strong and can handle heavy loads, making it suitable for supporting furniture, hot tubs, and other outdoor equipment.

10. Resistance to Warping and Cupping: Due to its density and low moisture absorption, Ipe is less likely to warp or cup compared to other wood species.

11. Natural Slip Resistance: Ipe has a natural slip resistance, which is an important safety feature for decking, especially in wet conditions. It has the Americans with Disability Act approval

12. Versatility: Ipe is not just for Ipe Wood Decks; it can also be used for siding and fencing.

As you can see from the many benefits, homeowners, and builders choose Ipe Brazilian Hardwood Decking for its exceptional durability and timeless beauty.

All our products conform to the US Lacey Act to help sustainability of the species. In addition, we buy from the same mills for years. As we are long-term customers the mills insure consistent and best quality of wood. For the discriminating and LEEDS customer, we also have FSC Certified products.

Brazilian Woods are very hard and tight grained. Once installed they will last decades even if ignored with respect to maintenance. Unlike pine or other woods Brazilian hardwoods will not crack and splinter after installation. They will outperform most any other wood decking.

A Brazilian deck is something to enjoy when you install and use, and still an asset upon the sale of your home. Pine and Cedar decks frequently need to be refurbished, painted or even replaced when you put your property for sale. One of our employees had a Brazilian deck down for 17 years and the inspectors could not believe it was that old. It looks just “a couple of years old” was what one said.

ABS Wood Sales team has decades of experience. We are not “order takers.” WE have been on the jobsite. We can help the customer with product selection, delivery expectations, and installation pitfalls. We do frequent consulting with architects, builders, contractors, and homeowners.

The Ipe Clip Extreme fastening system provides for a beautiful, no visible screws, deck installation. The Ipe Clip Extreme holds boards from moving left or right. It is one of the only clips that can make that claim. In addition, the Ipe Clip Extreme is rated for over 1000 pounds of uplift. The perfect solution for hurricane prone areas.

We provide Brazilian Wood products for customer installation. ABS Wood only buys from reputable mills in Brazil. With our long-term relationships, we are assured of importing only premium grade wood. In addition, all our wood conforms to the US Lacey act to insurance sustainability of the species. Beyond Lacey, we also have FSC Certified products.
