FAQs
A: Choosing the right wood depends on your project’s purpose, location, and desired aesthetics. At ABS Wood, we specialize in premium hardwoods like Ipe, Cumaru, Garapa, and Tigerwood, each offering unique benefits:
- Ipe: The most dense and durable, Brazilian hardwood. Ideal for high-traffic outdoor areas like decks and docks. Naturally resistant to rot, insects, and weather.
- Cumaru: Similar in strength to Ipe but with a warmer, golden-brown hue. Cost-effective solution compared to Ipe, great for decks, pergolas, and siding.
- Garapa: A lighter golden wood that provides a smooth, elegant finish—perfect for decks, ceilings, and outdoor furniture.
- Tigerwood: Known for its striking grain patterns and rich color variation. A popular choice for upscale designs and accent features.

A: Yes! Our hardwood decking, especially species like Ipe and Cumaru, is an excellent choice for poolside and hot tub areas. These woods are naturally dense, highly resistant to moisture, decay, and insect damage, making them durable in wet environments. Plus, their textured surface provides good slip resistance when wet. Just be sure to follow proper installation and maintenance guidelines to keep your deck looking great and safe for years to come. Of note, Ipe and other Brazilian Hardwoods do not get hot in the sun – unlike Trex and therefore is great for walking around barefoot in pool settings.

A: Ipe is one of the hardest and most durable woods available, significantly outperforming most domestic hardwoods in terms of strength and longevity. Its density makes it highly resistant to scratches, dents, rot, insects, and weather, qualities that make it ideal for outdoor applications like decking, siding, and furniture. While domestic hardwoods like oak or maple are strong, they typically don’t match Ipe’s exceptional durability, especially in harsh outdoor conditions. That’s why Ipe is often chosen for projects requiring long-lasting performance with minimal maintenance. (for more details : https://www.wood-database.com/wood-articles/janka-hardness/)
A: Ipe is naturally fire-resistant compared to many other woods due to its high density and tight grain structure. It doesn’t easily ignite or burn quickly, making it a safer choice for areas near fire pits, grills, or outdoor fireplaces. However, it’s important to always follow local building codes and safety guidelines when installing decking or structures near open flames or heat sources. While Ipe offers enhanced fire resistance, it’s not completely fireproof.
A: While it’s possible to install Ipe decking yourself if you have solid DIY experience and the right tools, we generally recommend using a professional installer for the best results. Ipe is a very dense, hard wood that sometimes requires specialized tools and techniques, such as pre-drilling and using stainless steel fasteners, to avoid splitting and ensure a secure, long-lasting installation. A professional installer will also be familiar with proper spacing, ventilation, and finishing methods to maximize the durability and appearance of your deck.
A: Like all natural wood, Ipe expands and contracts in response to changes in humidity and temperature. However, due to its high density and low moisture absorption, Ipe experiences less movement compared to many other woods. Proper installation including allowing adequate spacing between boards helps accommodate this natural expansion and contraction, preventing warping or buckling. With correct installation and maintenance, Ipe decks remain stable and beautiful through seasonal weather changes.
A: Yes, like most hardwoods, Ipe will naturally weather and fade to a silvery-gray patina if left untreated and exposed to sunlight and rain. Many homeowners appreciate this natural aging look. However, if you prefer to maintain the rich, warm brown color of fresh Ipe, regular application of a UV-protective finish or oil is recommended.
Maintenance Tips:
- Clean your deck regularly with a mild soap and water solution to remove dirt and debris.
- Apply a quality UV-protective wood oil or finish designed for dense tropical hardwoods at least once a year. Popular options include products like Penofin, Messmer’s UV Plus, or TWP (Total Wood Preservative).
- Avoid using harsh cleaners or pressure washing at high settings, as these can damage the wood surface.
- Routine maintenance will help preserve the color, protect the wood from UV damage, and extend the life of your deck.
Ipe Deck Maintenance Schedule
Every 3–6 Months:
- Sweep away leaves, dirt, and debris to prevent mold and mildew buildup.
- Inspect the deck for any signs of damage, loose boards, or fasteners.
Annually:
- Thoroughly clean the deck using a mild soap and water solution or a wood cleaner specifically formulated for hardwoods. Avoid harsh chemicals.
- Rinse thoroughly and allow the deck to dry completely.
Once a Year (or Every 12 Months):
- Apply a UV-protective wood oil or finish (such as Penofin, Messmer’s UV Plus, or TWP).
- Follow the product’s instructions for application to ensure proper penetration and protection.
Every 3–5 Years:
Consider a light sanding if the surface feels rough or if old finish needs removal before reapplying oil/finish.
