Frequently Asked Questions
1. Is cedar lumber easy to work with, what about cutting, fastening, and finishing?
Yes, cedar lumber is very easy to work with. It’s a relatively soft wood, which makes cutting and shaping simple with standard tools. Cedar also accepts nails and screws well without splitting, and because it’s pitch-free, it’s easy to stain, paint, or finish. Many builders appreciate how lightweight it is compared to hardwoods, making installation quicker and easier.
2. How durable is cedar lumber for outdoor use, does it require any treatment?
Cedar is naturally durable for outdoor use. Its heartwood contains natural oils and compounds that make it resistant to decay, moisture, and insect damage, which is why cedar has been a traditional choice for siding, decking, and fencing.
Unlike many other softwoods, cedar does not require chemical treatment to perform well outdoors. That said, to maintain its rich color and extend its lifespan, many homeowners choose to apply a protective stain or sealer. Left untreated, cedar will weather to a natural silver-gray patina over time.
3. What are the typical color, grain, and appearance characteristics of cedar lumber?
Cedar lumber is valued for its rich, natural beauty. The heartwood typically ranges from light pinkish-red to deep reddish-brown, often accented by lighter streaks of creamy white sapwood. Its grain is usually straight and even, though it may feature a slightly irregular or knotty pattern that adds rustic character. Cedar has a fine to medium texture with a natural luster, giving it a warm, inviting look. Over time, if left unfinished outdoors, it will gracefully weather to a silvery gray patina.
4. How does cedar lumber perform in terms of durability and resistance to decay?
Cedar lumber performs exceptionally well outdoors because of its natural durability. The heartwood contains oils and resins that make it naturally resistant to moisture, rot, and insect damage. This means cedar doesn’t need chemical preservatives to last in exposed conditions. While it isn’t as dense or hard as tropical hardwoods like Ipe or Apitong, cedar’s natural resistance allows it to hold up well for decking, siding, fencing, and other outdoor projects. With regular care, such as cleaning and optional sealing, cedar structures can provide decades of service life.
5. Where does ABS Wood source its cedar lumber from, and how does this impact sustainability?
ABS Wood sources its Eastern Red Cedar (Juniperus virginiana) from responsibly managed forests in British Columbia, where only one-third of one percent of BC cedar is harvested each year, a clear sign of careful, sustainable forestry practices.
How this sourcing supports sustainability:
- Low-impact harvesting: With such a minimal fraction of the forest harvested annually, cedar supplies are maintained responsibly, helping preserve forest health and ecosystem balance.
- Renewable and certified resources: Cedar from B.C. often comes from a region where more than 85% of timberland is certified by recognized, independent agencies, those that monitor environmental stewardship, biodiversity, and water and soil protection.
Environmental advantages of wood: Compared to non-renewable materials like concrete and steel, cedar has far lower carbon emissions during production and manufacturing. Plus, when trees are harvested, new ones are planted, helping forests act as continual carbon sinks.
