You’ve made a wise choice in selecting Brazilian ipe decking. Known for its exceptional durability and low-maintenance nature, ipe wood is a long-lasting investment that can enhance your outdoor living space for years to comeIt’s durable and requires minimal maintenance — a prudent, long-lasting investment that lets you enjoy your outdoor space for decades. Like other Brazilian hardwoods, ipe will last even longer with proper care. Aside from applying a high-quality finish, it’s recommended to examine your ipe deck at least once a year, preferably in the spring. You also need to keep the deck clean and free of debris to prevent potential damage.
In this blog, we will share specific tips to enhance the longevity of Brazilian ipe wood and protect your investment.
Considerations when checking your ipe deck
One crucial area to inspect is the connection point between your Brazilian ipe deck and your home (the ledger or ledger board). Persistent water leakage at this junction can lead to wood decay, which may weaken both the deck and your home’s structure.
If your deck is supported by your home’s structure, make sure that the ledger board is securely bolted to handle the load. You should also regularly inspect the condition of the joists, support posts, stairs, railings, and deck boards for any signs of damage or decay.
Check for signs of moisture damage
To identify potential moisture damage, look for areas that tend to retain moisture, such as fastener heads and areas frequently exposed to water. Use a screwdriver or ice pick to gently probe the Brazilian ipe wood’s surface. There may be decay if:
- The tool easily goes 1/4-1/2-inch deep
- The wood is spongy and soft
- The tool breaks off a sliver of wood without splinters
Check for insects and other problems
Brazilian ipe wood has natural oils and a dense structure that makes it naturally resistant to insects like pine borers and termites. But if you have an older deck, consider checking for small holes that may show signs of insect damage. Additionally, check for corroded or loose fasteners in your Brazilian ipe decking, and ensure the railings and any stairs or handrails are securely in place.
Now that we have inspected, it is time to enhance the life of your ipe deck
Brazilian ipe wood will naturally turn gray with sun exposure over the years because of UV light. If you want to preserve its rich brown color, you will need to apply a UV blocker finisher periodically. Before you do, it is advisable to clean your deck.
Clean and revitalize your ipe deck
Take the time to clean your deck before applying the deck finisher. Remove any dirt or stains with mild soap and water. For a soiled deck, you should use a commercial deck cleaner. Traditionally deck cleaners used oxalic acid but there are modern ones on the market that work as well.
When Cleaning, to prevent the wood from drying out too quickly, it’s best to clean your deck on an overcast day or early morning. Don’t forget to keep your Brazilian ipe decking constantly wet with the cleaning solution or water throughout the cleaning process.
Let it dry naturally
You need ample time when cleaning your deck because it needs to dry completely before you can apply a finish. This typically takes about 24 hours. However, you can use clean rags to wipe the Brazilian ipe wood to speed up the drying process. Next step is to apply a UV Protectant Finisher like thoses from Deckwise (Ipe Oil Plus) or Penofin.
Apply a deck finisher like a pro
Follow the manufacturer’s instructions when applying your preferred deck finisher on your Brazilian ipe decking. If you use this Ipe Oil finisher, you only need one coat to get the job done. We recommend using a broom to apply it instead of rollers so the oil can get in the gaps.
Next Season
Brazilian ipe wood doesn’t require regular treatment or sealing, but you may apply a UV-blocking finish every few years to preserve its natural brown hue. Otherwise, there are no other treatments necessary to make it last.
