ABS Wood Attends ASLA2024: A Fresh Perspective on Landscape Architecture

ABS Wood, represented by Bruce and Flora, recently had the exciting opportunity to attend ASLA2024, the annual conference of the American Society of Landscape Architects in Washington, D.C. While our expertise lies in premium Brazilian hardwoods like Ipe decking, attending ASLA2024 was a refreshing experience that introduced us to a world of innovative ideas and products that landscape architects are using to bring outdoor spaces to life. Though we typically stick to decking events, we were thrilled to explore what ASLA had in store for us!

A Standout Visit to Bison Innovative Products

One of the major highlights of ASLA2024 was meeting with Bison Innovative Products, led by their Southeast U.S. sales rep, Chris Pascente. Known for their cutting-edge outdoor products, Bison showcased an impressive range of offerings, both legacy and new. The unexpected star of their booth was their latest release: clear 2×2 tiles. These aren’t listed on their website yet, but they made a lasting impression on us with their thick, durable design. These transparent tiles let natural light filter through to lower decks or patios, creating unique lighting effects that can completely transform an outdoor space. Imagine the creative possibilities for designers—sunlight illuminating the area below a deck or casting beautiful patterns on the ground.

What’s even more interesting is the view-through feature, which allows people to look up through the tiles, adding a whole new dimension to how decks can interact with their environment. It was exciting to see how Bison’s commitment to innovation continues to redefine what’s possible in outdoor design. Their dedication to expanding the potential of deck spaces aligns with our passion for quality materials like Ipe decking that enhance the beauty and durability of outdoor areas.

Exploring an Array of Creative Landscape Solutions

While ABS Wood typically focuses on decking and wood-related trade shows, ASLA2024 opened up a whole new perspective for us on landscape-focused solutions. The event brought together a diverse range of products beyond wood—everything from unique playground equipment to decorative Chattahoochee stones. We were inspired to see how landscape architects are using materials creatively, and it broadened our view of how Brazilian hardwoods like Ipe could play a role in accentuating outdoor spaces in ways beyond decking alone.

One memorable sight was a massive playground slide that resembled either a cat or a squirrel—we’re still not entirely sure! Standing 20 feet tall, this playful structure was as functional as it was fun, and the crowd loved it. The photo we took hardly does it justice, but it’s easy to see why this giant feature captured so much attention.

Scaling New Heights with Berliner Play Equipment

A standout stop was at the Berliner Play Equipment booth, based out of Greenville, SC. We met with their representative, Jolie Ross, who shares our spirit for creativity and fun. Together, we climbed into their “Cubiron” from the Joe Brown Series. Perched way up high, we were reminded of how play and design can intersect in landscape architecture. The view was exhilarating, and the experience showed us that creativity has no bounds when it comes to designing spaces for both beauty and fun. Berliner’s innovative approach complements the joy we aim to bring to outdoor spaces with our premium Ipe decking.

A Memorable Experience, Thanks to Bison

Attending ASLA2024 was truly a memorable experience that opened our eyes to the boundless creativity in landscape architecture. A big thank you to Bison for inviting us to this inspiring event. Seeing so many innovative products has given us a fresh perspective on how Brazilian hardwoods, like Ipe, can be integrated into landscape designs to enhance both beauty and durability. We left with a sense of excitement about new possibilities and can’t wait to see how these fresh ideas might inspire our customers and projects in the future.
